Mošnov lies about 20 km south-west of Ostrava, by the Lubina River. According to the municipality's website, the first record of the village dates from 1367. The main part of Ostrava Airport lies within Mošnov's cadastral area.

The large airport near Mošnov was built between 1956 and 1960 and served mainly military aviation until the garrison was disbanded in 1995. The airport is connected to the railway, and a covered walkway links the nearby station to the check-in hall. St Margaret's Church was built in 1806 and 1807.
